Freeling Stevenson, a 74 year old Cass township resident, sought service in the world's war after years of local Home Guard activity. Rejected for age, he appealed to the Adjutant General and earned a lieutenant’s commission at the balloon school in Fort Omaha, serving until fighting ended. He had previously fought in the Civil War with the 18th Ohio infantry, was wounded at Hoover's Gap, and was briefly captured at Mumfordville. Mrs. J Frank Berry of Lewis is his daughter.

In Corning Indiana on April 24 plans were laid for the Congregational and Presbyterian churches to unite into one self sustaining church to be known as The People’s church. Past attempts to join failed but now all parties favor the change as the Congregationalists are pastorless.
