Walnut native Second Lt. George Furey age 19 completed pilot training at Ft. Sumner New Mexico. He arrived in Walnut for an eight day furlough with his mother Mrs Laura Furey. He is a Walnut High School 1942 graduate and attended the State University of Town before enlisting in February 1943.

Washington April 19 Senator Guy M Gillette says the agricultural subcommittee will soon investigate the manufacture of binder twine and rope using farm crops. Senator Wilson reports three of his sons in service, including John recently en route to Camp Dodge.
Des Moines hosts the 29th annual Iowa Press Association convention April 28 and 29 with more than 200 Iowa newspapers expected. I. C. Kartack, acting manager, announced speakers from out of state include Paul Hoffman of Studebaker and C. R. F. Smith of the Office of War Information. The 13th annual master editor publisher award will be announced at the meeting.

Parents enroll sons and daughters in Camp Foster on Lake Okoboji to give them normal living away from wartime tension. John Hoff notes hundreds from southwest Iowa will attend with camp for boys June 28 to July 8 and girls August 3 to 13. Camp Foster periods run June 18 to 28 for boys and July 24 to August 3 for girls. Ages nine to seventeen. A sailboat and new canoes join the fleet amid demand for overnight canoe trips.
Griswold students and groups earned ratings at the Greenfield pre state contest on Saturday. Elizabeth Brown played clarinet and piano, Kenneth Mueller cornets Carolyn Prokop saxophone, brass sextet and girls sextet. clarinet quartet and Jayne McConnellee soprano soloist each earned a 2 rating. Martha Johnson music supervisor and J E Dickey band director accompanied the group.
