Des Moines April 18 The Iowa crop and livestock reporting service said 97 percent of oats and other small grain were seeded by April 13. Early fields show promising stands and above average yields likely, though wet ground slowed some areas. Frosts caused little damage. peaches and plums may have suffered but are not commercially important in Iowa.
Des Moines reports J E K Beaty a 30 year old former navy lieutenant commander described as a sound sleeper by deputies who forced entry to the Mainliner night club under a court liquor injunction, padlocked doors, and then pounded on an apartment door in the closed venue.
Mrs Beaty and their daughter Patricia aged three returned home to find the house locked and appealed to the sheriff for help. They located Beaty, an air lines passenger agent, sleeping peacefully and unaware he had been kept prisoner eight hours. He remarked he never heard a thing.
Des Moines reports Iowa may add a corn image to the three cent stamp issued for the state hood centennial. The committee favored Westward mural but Washington says it has too much detail. Ralph Evans of Davenport leads the stamp sub committee and awaits a final decision.
The Hague April 18 The new Court of International Justice opened with Jose Gustavo Guerrero of El Salvador as president. Thirteen other justices from 14 UN members took oaths at the Peace Palace as the League of Nations era ends. The court pledges continuity, prestige, and peaceful dispute settlement. Green H Hackworth, former US legal advisor, serves as a member.
