End of a Long Fight Over Lake Michigan Waterdiversion

The United States Supreme Court issued a final decree in the lake levels case involving the Chicago sanitary district and Lake Michigan water diversions. It reduces the diversion to 1 500 cubic feet per second by 1988 with staged cuts to 5 000 by December 1956, and requires completion of a sewage treatment plant costing 175 million dollars within nine years. The decision preserves Chicago’s ability to divert 2 200 cfs after 1938, including 1 500 cfs for treatment, while allowing possible modification if conditions change.
