James G. Whitney of Whitney Lawn and Trust marks forty years since starting in banking on April 16 1878 after leaving school to work for his father Franklin H. Whitney. He began at the old Bank of Attende and helped build a local banking era now with deposits totaling about four and a half million dollars. The United States Civil Service Commission reports that by order of the President on March 27, 1918, the residency exam requirement is suspended for the war. Applicants may take civil service exams at any location where offered, regardless of residence. Only those domiciled in a state for one year prior remain eligible for permanent departmental appointments in Washington, D. C. Stenographers, typists, and bookkeepers are in high demand, with weekly exams nationwide. Officials at post offices provide details and blanks.
