A one story frame building housing classrooms laboratories and a lecture hall at Upper Iowa University burned early Thursday. Three former Carroll tavern operators pleaded guilty to keeping liquor on premises used by Class B permit holders. Gust Provoltu les of Lincoln Club Mabel Brown of Brown Derby and Wihao Hamilton of Chatterboxton were fined $300 plus costs by District Judge F H Cooney. Indictments followed state and local liquor raids last December. three others remain under indictment.

ui Wayne Gifford Shafer 29 of Council Bluffs was killed early Thursday when his panel truck collided with a moving Chicago & Great Western train at a crossing. The truck was dragged about 30 feet. No signals were reported at the crossing. Shafer left to Kansas on a selling trip. he is survived by his widow and son Jerry three months. Coroner to hold a inquest.
A slot machine was found abandoned in a roadside ditch north of Dubuque. A schoolboy reported it to officers as authorities seek to determine ownership. Slot machines are illegal in Iowa.
