Nevada settlement Squatter Town was struck by a ten foot wall of water after a northern cloudburst. About 130 buildings were destroyed and 5000 people left homeless. Two women and four children were reported missing though no confirmed deaths yet. Property losses exceed a quarter of a million dollars.
George W. Somerville ex state senator and noted Minnesota lawyer was shot in his Sleepy Eye office by John Hayner who was arrested at New Ulm jail after a crowd demanded action. Three shots hit Somerville in the left lung and left shoulder. a third bullet lodged in the ceiling. No motive known.
Honovenden the Hooven residence near Hamilton Ohio was destroyed by a fire started from a gas jet in Col Hooven s room. Loss estimated at 50000 with insurance partly covering. A mahogany jewel case containing 7000 dollars worth of jewels belonging to Mrs Hooven was stolen during the blaze.
New York reports the coroner delaying the burial of Mrs J A Derr while probing her death. Her son Frederick W M Thackeray alleges she was imprisoned and maltreated by a famous palmist she consulted. Burial certificate cited phthisis as cause of death.
In Philadelphia on September 2 a well dressed 22 year old woman from ABC was found in the Schuylkill at Mount Park after park guards were alerted by the sighting of a shoe and clothing on the riverbank. The guards were directed to the scene by the discovery.
Copenhagen dispatch reports Dr. Cook reached the North Pole on April 21, 1908 aboard the Danish steamer Hans Engede. The Esquimaux of Cape York confirm his journey. National Geographic officials had feared his loss and funded a relief expedition. The expedition began in 1907 from North Sydney with the John R. Bradley and Capt. Moses Bradley.
Two masked men robbed Mills County German Bank in Mineola on September 2. They forced cashier I. F. Nipp and two farmers into a back room while the other robber took $1,500. A posse pursued but there was no trace of the robbers at latest reports.
Readville Mass September 2 Teron Alcyon defeats a field of 87 horses to win the second division of the American Trotting Derby by three lengths, finishing ahead of Axialof.
Seventy five passengers on the steamer St Paul traveling from St Louis to St Paul along the Mississippi witnessed a savage mutiny by about twenty cabin boys and crew. Head mate Jesse Irwin was cut and Washington Rhoades was shot in the hip and hospitalised. Knives and revolvers sparked panic as the mutineers demanded wages and forced their way to the wharf.
In mid Atlantic the Atlantic Transport steamer Minneapolis battled a fire in its forehold for four days after leaving New York August 21. Passengers remained unaware until Tilbury port. Wireless calls for aid prompted Vaderland to rush to the scene and stand by for 12 hours before the danger subsided. The ship carries only first class passengers with livestock below deck.
New York report says Gov Hughes received charges from Bird S Coler president of Brooklyn alleging Mayor McClellan ordered investigations used to target political opponents and that city funds were misused by at least $100,000 in the Brooklyn borough office alone.
Philadelphia reports the new battleship Michigan of the Dreadnaught class has been turned over to the United States government. It displaces 16 000 tons and carries eight 12 inch guns. Commanded by Capt N R Usher, it will stay at the navy yard until the crew is ready.
New Castle Kentucky faced a major blaze described as the worst in its history. The fire began at Bondurant's livery stable at 2 30 and spread to surrounding buildings on the square. The Cumberland Telephone Company exchange burned around 3 00 and reports from Eminence four miles away said the fire climbed higher by 4 00 with heavy expected losses. Manslaughter Charged After Fatal Accident In Omaha. County attorney English filed a manslaughter complaint against George Gilmore the chauffeur who struck and killed Miss Sadie Hopper in Omaha Nebraska.
A $200,000 blaze at Pittsburg Pennsylvania destroyed the transfer and storage house of J. A. Blanck, damaged several adjoining structures, and injured two firemen. The origin is not known. Investigations point toward an explosion at an American Steel and Wire plant near Dorart.
Washington appeals for funds to aid 16000 Mexican flood sufferers as Monterey reports hundreds of funerals for flood victims. Troops aid debris clearing and rebuild plans, with rail service restored to Laredo. Local tents house homeless while factories and streets are repaired under federal relief efforts.
A group of 46 Japanese bankers merchants parliament educators and editors arrived in Seattle aboard the Minnesota to promote friendship and commerce with the United States. Crowds gathered at the Great Northern wharf as bamboo cannons fired balloons and paper figures. Gov Marion E Hay Seattle Mayor John Miller and J D Lowman welcomed the delegation with speeches.
Wilbur Glenn Voliva, Zion City leader, stays defiant in jail awaiting six months or a $10,000 judgment in McHenry County. Judge Robert Wright ruled in a libel suit brought by Phillip Mothers, formerly of Zion City, now a Montana farmer, over a public address to the Zion City congregation.
Four people are hospitalized after a clash between strike sympathizers and imported workers at Shenango and Greer Tin Plate plant in New Castle Pennsylvania. Two officers a worker and a boy were injured as force was used. State troops had recently been withdrawn for duty at McKee's Rocks.
Bandits robbed the German State Bank of Mills County and vanished into thick underbrush. Police and posses from Mineola and Silver City scoured the area all night but found no trace. The loss exceeded 1500 dollars and was fully covered by Burglar Insurance. Suspects reportedly in hiding at Henderson as rumors spread.
Chicago and seven other railroads withdrew their suit to block the interstate commerce commission new proportional rate between Chicago and Des Moines. The withdrawal follows a circuit court Missouri River rate decision denying the commission power to set new rates, with the Des Moines principle to be reviewed by the U S Supreme Court.
C. M. Newton, 32, of Des Moines, died during a river camp near Marshalltown on Sept 2 presumably from a drug overdose. Officials suspect morphine addiction led to accidental strychnine exposure. He traveled with his brother and family. his wife died two months earlier in Des Moines. The coroner investigates.
Waterloo September 2 The Baptists honored Rev James Lemen Sr by unveiling a monument in the cemetery. Large attendance from Illinois St Louis and elsewhere heard the principal address by William J Bryan. Canada’s Big Fair Opens in Toronto as Lord Beresford presses a button to start the machinery.
Chicago reports the fortieth anniversary of the Prohibition Party to be celebrated September 24. National Chairman Jones announces the event. Des Moines dispatch notes Colonel Al Swalm, former United States ambassador to Southampton, has arrived for a two week visit with old friends.
