Balkans on Edge Behind Power Driven Reforms
A Saxon column argues that the Balkan crisis stems from rival European greed and failed reforms in Macedonia. It traces Russia and Austria’s quarrel over railway plans, the 1903 Berlin framework, and the Muerzsteg conference, noting bungled governance, foreign officers’ corruption, and Britain’s reluctant moral leadership amid rising Turkish strength.

Stevens Casts Doubt on Panama Canal Viability
John F. Stevens, vice president of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad and former Panama Canal chief engineer, argues the canal will be a continual expense, unlikely to aid U S trade with South America or the Pacific. He predicts rising coal and wheat shifts, limited canal benefits, and finishing costs higher than expected with January 1915 as a proposed completion date. He favors funding a stronger navy over canal expenditure.

Minority Opposes Williams Substitute to Fowler Banking Bill
Democratic members of the house banking committee report against the Williams substitute, warning it would strip government power to regulate national banks. They fear a bank controlled board could fix money supply, interest rates, and inflation or contraction, yielding all monetary power to banks. They urge adoption of the Williams bill as a safer alternative.
