Dr Wilfred Grenfell, missionary physician at Battle Harbor Labrador, endured forty hours on a drifting ice pack as hunger maddened dogs attacked him in ten below zero. He cut his skin boots to shield himself, killed three dogs for warmth and food, and used dog leg bones as a signal pole, a flag spotted by locals near Locke's Cove leading to rescue. Grenfell, praised for improving coastal welfare, is backed largely by American supporters.
