Local team drivers and performers entertain at Avoca fair
A group of players led by captain A J Wertman stayed with Nels Jensen and wife in the National Bank building, aiding a lively outing with the Lucases and West Foster street entertainment. West Foster’s blackface act amused crowds while Carl Carson from Anita added cornet strength. Receipts reached about $1,200 at the fairgrounds gate as Avoca, Shenandoah, Red Oak and Creston groups held a bustling tournament with carnival features and confetti battles. A notable romance tied to the event saw C J Burnham of Villisca wed Miss Oliver Rockwell of Stanton at the M B E parsonage, after traveling to attend the tournament.
