Handies Ship Four Master at San Pedro
The four master ship at San Pedro discharged most of her crew and signed 14 new men as she prepared to sail to Tacoma in ballast. Real sailors were scarce and green hands were relied on for deck work and lighting the binnacle. When weather threatened, the novices proved useless for aloft duties or steering. Captain Durken says the voyage up the coast was remarkable under these circumstances.
