Mountaineer Assaults Pendleton Attorney in Office

In Pendleton a confrontation at attorney A. D. Stillman's office escalated as W. M. Pierce and Green joined Mt. Ruddock in attacking Stillman. Ruddock struck with his stomach and fists as chairs and typewriters were damaged. Warrant issued for Green's arrest and complaints filed against Pierce in two justice courts, creating four related cases from the morning incident.

Miles to Command the Army After Schofield’s Retirement

Major-General Nelson A. Miles from Governor's Island will assume command on the 20th inst as Lieut. Gen. Schofield goes on the retired list for age. No promotions or department shifts follow. Merritt will keep the Missouri Department from Chicago, Ruger moves to Governor's Island as next ranking officer. Miles, 57, would be the youngest army head aside from Sherman.

New Smelting Process Cut Ore Reduction to One Dollar Per Ton
