War-Maimed Men Defy Federal Authority in Oregon
Elwood Best and Emory Davis, two mountaineers from Umpqua National Forest, were brought to Portland by a deputy U S marshal to face contempt charges for defying a court order. Best, a World War I veteran, and Davis have lived on land claimed as theirs, arguing the forest manual supports their right to dwell there. The men, who say they fear for their cabins if forced off, deny gun violence and await a hearing with American Legion backing me.
