Prominent Mason Grover Hayes Dies in Portland

Grover G. Hayes a 32nd degree Mason and former Master of Albert Lodge No 172 A F and A M died September 2 in Portland. Born October 13 1885 in Humbolt Nebraska he lived in Athena from age eight and later married Elsa Ackles in La Grande Oregon. Survived by wife son Grayden daughter Alice two sisters Mrs Berlin and Mrs Gladys Lewis and brother Earl O Hays. Interment was in Riverview cemetery Portland under Albert Lodge auspices with large funeral attendance.

Wheat and Oil For Farmers of Montana

Montana farmers prosper on grain and oil. David N Nelson of Pendleton notes Montana will harvest about 74 million bushels of wheat and 30 million of oats, with 45 to 50 bushels per acre. He reports 60 oil wells near Conrad delivering 50 to 100 barrels daily, with five year leases and royalties for farmers.

Pipe Contract Awarded for Athena Water Line Upgrade

The city council awarded Beale Tank & Pipe Co. a contract to furnish 3450 feet of welded dipped steel water pipe for immediate delivery. The pipe will replace decayed line from the reservoir to the city, with work starting on receipt. Prior replacement of 169 feet of old wood pipe improves the system.

Jury Awards Damages in Pendleton Auto Crash Case

Damages of 8800 dollars were awarded to Mrs. Katie Bauer in the Pendleton circuit court after an automobile collision on June 7 1927 involving a car driven by J M Banister a Weston farmer. She sought 15000 general damages and 1369 special damages with Banister’s lawyers signaling an appeal.

Exoneration for Pendleton Robbery Suspects

A coroner's jury at Pendleton fully exonerated two men who shot and killed robber John Hendricks after he looted three stores and tried a fourth at Pilot Rock. The jury ruled they acted to protect lives and property and called Pilot Rock citizens completely exonerated.

On November 11 nearly all U S radio stations will shift wavelengths under a Federal Radio Commission plan. George W. Lieuallen Pioneer Farmer Dead

George W. Lieuallen of Athena, a longtime farmer with his sons on wheat land, died yesterday at home from heart failure after years of distress. Born in Missouri 65 years ago en route to Oregon, he married Olive May McKinney in 1887 and leaves five sons, one daughter, five sisters, and a brother. Funeral services will be at the Christian church in Athena Sunday at 2 PM.

Oregon State College Farm Market Review

Country buyers took white wheat at interior points for eastward shipment last week with premiums over Portland export price. Pacific coast wheat markets were firmer as demand rose, with some red and white wheat moving to Atlantic ports and Minneapolis. No. 2 soft red winter held firm in St. Louis around 1.46 to 1.48 a bushel. Pacific northwest white wheat sold around 1.10 to 1.25. World wheat market showed little trend. exports this season total 15 million bushels vs 3 million last year. Russian crop expected similar to last year, possibly limiting exports.
