E F Bloom superintendent of Athena schools received a letter from C A Howard state superintendent urging a rental and book exchange plan to cut high school textbook costs. Howard says several books may be bought used or donated, with new texts only after enrollments.
Esther Berlin of Athena and Alton Vaughan of Milton married at 9 am Saturday in Pendleton Christian church. Rev. Guy L. Drill officiated. attendants were James and Mrs James McCall. The bride is Theresa Berlin's daughter and a musician active in school groups. the groom works for Union Pacific. They will live in Milton. a bridal dinner followed with family present.
A delegation from Umatilla County visited Walla Walla to meet area businessmen and protest Washington state actions to adjudicate the Walla Walla river waters. They fear irrigation for several tracts and orchards will be crippled by the ruling.
John Pinkerton recently left for Indianapolis to work for the Van Camp company. He reports intense heat and says he is nicely settled with duties in both office and field work.
Walla Walla pilot Bert Coulson with passengers Miss Lela Schubert and Dick Robinson escaped injury when the aircraft struck a high voltage wire on a Pacific Power line. Coulson glided a few feet above ground and landed safely in Reed field, power cut off for repairs.
A church reception honored Rev and Mrs Sias with a program of piano and vocal solos, readings, and a vocal trio. Friends presented a gift and a birthday cake as they announced departure for Turner to oversee the Christian church Boys Home.
A Christian Missionary society gathering met Monday afternoon at Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton home with Mrs. Louis Keen leading. Several members attended including Miss Crawford Mrs. Eager and daughter Virginia Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton and daughter Joyce and Mrs. McPherson and Mrs. McKay. Tea was served to twenty ladies by Mrs. Pinkerton assisted by Mrs. Johns Mrs. Scott and Miss Bonnie Johnson. Next meeting will be hosted by Mrs. Charlton with Mrs. McPherson to lead. Mrs. John Stanton and Mildred Stanton were guests.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Scott have returned from a fortnight visit to Portland and Willamette valley points. They visited Miss Pauline Scott in Salem where she works as secretary for the State Accident Commission. Margaret Luck, another Scott daughter, is employed with Farmers' National Grain Corporation in Pendleton.
Charles May from Ashland reports Athena as a pleasant place to live but notes a pronounced low mood there. He adds that former Athena residents Mr. and Mrs. William Rice work at a canning factory in Ashland.
Roy Warner, a pilot for Varney Air lines, spotted a small fire over the Blue mountains. He circled it to alert a forest service guard traveling by automobile, enabling faster action. Warner then phoned from Pasco to verify the fire location, helping hold it to a small acreage at low cost.
Oregon state police arrested 22 drunken motorists in August, yielding 21 convictions. Fines ranged from 250 dollars with 90 days in jail to 1000 dollars and one year license suspension. July saw 15 arrests, with June five and May five. authorities expect August totals to rise toward 30.
Committeemen named by Governor Meier for Umatilla county unemployment committee appoint chairmen for towns outside Pendleton. E C Rogers to represent Athena, Bert Kirby for Adams, and C W Avery for Weston with Judge I M Schannep, L L Rogers, and Charles Bond.
The Athena Study club holds its first fall meeting this afternoon at Mrs. E. C. Rogers home. Officers are to be elected for the coming year. The year's study begins with "Travels in America" a 21 lesson course. Roll call resumes tomorrow with current events.
Herman Geissel and Floyd Arbogast came up from Rit ter Grant county on Friday and visited the Geissel home They attended the Round Up Saturday and returned to the stock ranch Sunday Despite the dry condition of the range stock is looking fairly well in Grant county
School opening moved to Tuesday because Labor Day falls on Monday and many pupils are out of town. A teachers meeting will be held on Monday at the school house with no other activities.
Clinton Hodgen II of Athena has been seriously ill at his La Grande home for two weeks. His mother Mrs. Fred Hodgen of Adams has been called to his bedside and reports now say he is improving.
Oregon Senator Frederick Steiner tells a Portland Kiwanis audience that only higher federal inheritance and upper-bracket income taxes can fund aid for the unemployed and avert unrest. He warns wealth concentration threatens government stability and urges the able to bear the burden.
J E Jones a rural mail carrier at Athena attended the Eastern Oregon rural carriers picnic at Emigrant Springs Sunday. The association has 80 of the 33 carriers in the district. The meet ing adopted all resolutions from a year ago. The group went on record opposing merger with the labor federation while the Eastern Oregon association is recognized by the Federation. Ray Jones substitute carrier and Ray Gordon with their wives also attended.
The East Oregonian reports a Monday afternoon blaze at the Pendleton airport that destroyed two aircraft owned by C. W. Rigdon. The larger plane under Pendleton Airways, a four passenger Ryan cabin ship, operated flights between Pendleton and Portland. The smaller Aronca trainer was used in Rigdon's flying school.
Week long visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Brace in Thorn Hollow included Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mahaffey and sons Laurel and Elmer, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Lane and daughters Velma and Opal, Mrs. L O Kelly, and Mrs. Martha Mahaffey from Silver Lake Oregon. Martha Mahaffey stayed an extra week then headed to Gibbon to live with her daughter Mrs. J F Thompson for the winter.
Four Orchardville district teachers waited for hours Monday near Yakima for the school to open. The district clerk said only 1.50 dollars was in the treasury. The district enrolled 113 pupils last year and is negotiating next steps.
Ludwig Schulbach a 71 year old Lewis and Clark district farmer near Astoria was gored to death in his garden by a large bull His wife Mrs Schulbach found his body and notified neighbors and authorities through the local farm community.
Salem dispatch reports Frank E. Studnick world champion bucking horse rider says Ed McCarty and Vern Elliott of Wyoming aim to undermine Midnight's reputation. He rode Midnight at Pendleton for at least 10 seconds and offers a third ride at the Oregon State Fair. Studnick notes his 11 years of outlaw riding and recalls winning Canada’s championship with Midnight years ago. He ranks seventh in the American Rodeo Association standings after nine shows.
A federal engineering party completed a 26 mile survey of the upper Snake River and now drifts downstream between Lewiston and The Dalles. Soundings near Pasco will be sent to Washington for review while blasting widens navigation as far as Pittsburg landing 30 miles beyond the Salmon River mouth.

Mrs Glen Sias departed Sunday evening for Fossil Oregon to spend the winter. She will tutor the Huntington family children while there. News arrived just before her departure that Mr Huntington is seriously ill in a hospital at The Dalles.
Walla Walla county commissioners cut three budgets by 12 883.50 under state law. The health office faced the largest reductions, eliminating the county nurse sanitary inspector and dairy inspector positions.
Two unmasked robbers overpowered the cashier Kathryn Joehnke and fled with 1500 from the First National Bank of Aurora just before closing time Tuesday. The alleged thieves entered the bank five minutes before closing.
Four new teachers join Athena schools as classes begin next Tuesday replacing Monday. Hazel Williamson will handle grades five and six with music training from Eastern Oregon Normal. Olive Calef leads grades three and four with art background from Monmouth Normal and University of Oregon. Gladys Milligan teaches first and second grades after Cheney Normal and Waitsburg experience. Mrs Stewart will join high school science part time from Pendleton, holding a B S from Linfield and study at Columbia. Mary Cameron, English teacher, has been delayed by surgery and aims to return by September 12.
Mrs. Grant Prestbye reports a 500 acre cattle range burned near Kalispel Montana as a forest fire swept through the area four miles from the home. The house and barn were saved by firefighters and ample water but contents were damaged by smoke and pitch residue. Stock loss is unknown due to blocked range access. a few burned feet cattle have returned. The ranch lies about 15 miles from Kalispell with valuable meadows.
McBride Bros threshed over 50 bushels of Federation wheat per acre from 250 acres of bean ground along Eagle Creek south of Weston. They also harvested 120 acres of wheat for Judge Sehannep on similar ground, showing no difference in yield whether ground had been used for bean culture.
Governor Julius L. Meier, who left Salem for Portland last week after an indigestion attack, is confined to his bed. His physician orders at least a week of rest, canceling this week’s state tour and reducing office hours in Salem. He had planned to visit state institutions and many cities across the state.
John Vert, a Pendleton resident, announced at a church dinner that $45,000 has been set aside as a gift to Pendleton Presbyterian Church. The funds will be used for the erection of a new church building.
Vic Bracher of Pilot Rock sent twenty Mongolian and thirty China pheasants to Anchorage for liberation by a noted organization. Bracher previously shipped a large consignment to the Hawaiian Islands a year earlier.
Major John S. Butler notes in Civil Engineering that irrigation is the priority for the Columbia Basin, with six key conclusions including irrigation of 1,600,000 acres as paramount, power and navigation tied to dam siting, and flood control limited to the lower river.
At 11 o clock last Friday morning a simple ceremony at the Methodist church parsonage Pendleton united Miss Marjorie Wilson and Wilburn H Kayser. Rev Wemett read the ceremony with Mrs Charles Wilson and Harold Kirk as attendants. The bride, a former Athena resident, wore a brown ensemble with beige embroidery and a brown Empress Eugenie hat. The couple will reside in Athena. Miss Wilson is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Wilson of Athena and a 1929 local high school graduate. Mr Kayser, a University of Idaho agriculture graduate and Theta Kappa Epsilon member, works at the Washington Idaho Seed plant in Athena.
Margaret Proebstel, once a Honolulu nurse and daughter of late Senator G. W. Proebstel of Weston, died in San Francisco from a cerebral hemorrhage. The remains were taken to Weston for burial by brother Charles Proebstel of Santa Fe. Funeral at Weston Tuesday at 2 p m. Survived by two sisters Mrs Lillian Fredericks of Weston and Mrs Levi Hughes of Santa Fe and two brothers Charles S. Proebstel of Santa Fe and Albert Proebstel of San Diego.

Norvell Ferguson of Woaton is jailed after failing to pay a $10 fine for driving without a 1931 license. Judge B K Richards ordered confinement in the county jail after Ferguson was arrested by state police officer Lawrence Pittinger.
Marion Christman, 22, driver for Oregon Trail Lumber, died Tuesday after a log rolled from the top of his truck and crushed him at Catherine Creek, Invar Union.
