La Grande Councilmen Face Grafting Trial This Week
Councilmen Ed Bartlett and Steven Gardinier of La Grande are on trial in the circuit court for grafting the saloons in the city. They allegedly took 126 each from the saloon operators to permit gambling. City Marshal Louis Rayburn testified against them in an open council meeting three months ago, during which Gardinier attacked Rayburn. Gardinier, once an O R N brakeman, and Bartlett, a former La Grande land office register, are widely believed in La Grande to be guilty.

Formaldyhyde Seedwheat Use Questioned by Pendleton Farmer
John Bahr a prominent Pendleton farmer says only about 380 percent of this year’s Umatilla county wheat has been sold. He notes most sales come from farmers near Pendleton Adams and Athens, while distant areas hold grain as markets fell. Prices ranged from 45 to 60 cents per bushel with much smutty wheat. Bahr approves formaldehyde treatment if timed with favorable post sowing conditions and insists sowing not be delayed beyond two days after treatment.
