Whitman Opens Football Season Against Spokane High

Whitman plays Spokane High School on Ankeny Field in the season opener on October 11. Fire in Weston Jail Endangers Inmate Potie Kinnear

A Weston jail fire alarm drew a crowd after Potie Kinnear, jailed for drinking and disorderly conduct, allegedly set a broom blaze with matches. He yelled to attract attention, was pulled out by City Marshal Lavender and revived by two physicians. The jail suffered no structural damage.

Families from Lima settle in Milton amid growth push

Eighteen men women and children from Lima Ohio arrived in Milton a day or two ago and decided to locate permanently. Some had tickets to Tacoma but found Milton appealing and chose to stay. They praise Milton as well advertised by the Milton Commercial Club and plan to settle here.

Death at Stanton warehouse shocks town

W and Allen, brother of Mrs Carmicheal, fell from a high sack pile while stacking wheat at the Stanton warehouse on the Northern Pacific. He died, possibly from heart failure or a stroke, and was taken to Helix for funeral services. He had worked here about two years, lost an arm, and left a sister, father, and other relatives. An operation was performed on W R Taylor in Walla Walla. an 8 inch incision yielded about a quart of fluid and tubes remained. George Horseman’s manslaughter sentence was delayed as a new trial motion is considered following a violent hazing incident involving Olph and others.

Forger Works in Garden City

Three more bold forgeries were reported Saturday night in Garden City. A young man signing as W O Wooder and another named Arthur Wright passed checks totaling 162.75 to local merchants including de Motter Wheeler company Hanger Thompson firm and Schwabacher firm. The checks bore the name W O Smith ranch manager near Prescott. Descriptions of the forger are limited to a young man who has worked on nearby ranches for about three months. Sheriff Haviland has a complete description and expects an arrest soon based on related leads.

Hazers Defeated In Severe College Hazing Incident

At the state agricultural college in Corvallis a clash between freshmen and sophomores led to a knife attack during a planned hazing bee. Frenchman Robert Olpit of Prairie City Ore, a new undergraduate, endured threats and was assaulted as upperclassmen pursued a ducking by the fountain.
