New Turbine Pump Arrives for City Water Works
A. D. Daly of Pairbanke Moree company is in the city to install a Byron Jackson turbine pump with 850 gallons per minute capacity and a 50 horsepower Fairbanks Morse electric motor. The project requires building alterations, work by water commission men, and power transmission from the Preston Parton transformer station.

Western Washington forest fires burn 32000 acres
Report by D P Simotra chief fire warden cites approximately 82 000 acres of timber land burned last summer in Western Washington. About 61 450 000 feet of timber destroyed with losses around 500 000 for mills and equipment. Firefighting costs totaled 45 000 from the association and 28 000 from the state warden.

Oregon Railroad Commission Orders Grain Rate Cuts
Grain rates from eastern Oregon to Portland on the Oregon Railroad and Navigation lines are reduced by about 12.5 percent effective October 20 after hearings in Portland and Salem. The order applies to wheat and all grains shipped from Tumwater to St Johns and other Portland area points, with substantial savings projected for grain growers this year and no changes for Tumwater or Celilo Falls routes. Justice Parkes presided locally, with public addresses and a church reception accompanying the measure.

District Attorney G W Phelps of Umatilla county was instructed by the railroad commission to file mandamus proceedings in the circuit court to compel the Oregon Railroad and Navigation company to restore the local Portland to Pendleton service abandoned since May 16 1900. The order dates to September 1907 and the commission says current service is inadequate. Arthur Spence attorney for ORN elaborated that reestablishing the Portland Pendleton train is expected next Monday, with the commission aware of the arrangements when it issued the mandamus directive. The report also notes a parallel press item about relay auto service and other local stories.

The Morashoraa trial jurors deadlocked after 18 hours and were discharged by Judge Bean on Saturday afternoon.
