A 16 inch shell fired in a Navy test at Indian Head Maryland plowed through a wall and second floor of Mia Swann’s house, crossed a back porch, and ended near a ground floor before stopping. Mary Swann and her child were unharmed, while the shell’s impact went through a gunner’s house several hundred yards away.
Thirteen steamers join to form the Pacific Steamship company from the Pacific Coast Steamship and Pacific Alaska Navigation firms. The merger, effective November 1, consolidates 55,000 tons of freight and passenger capacity, with vessels valued above 12 million dollars. The new firm will operate along the entire Pacific Coast, including Alaska, under a single management to improve service and frequency of sailings.
Douglas Alex-Viit Turk known as Runty, one cowboy, was arrested on charges of robbing the United States mail and the Golden State Limited near here on September 6. He awaits action by the federal grand jury. Bond set at $19,000, not yet fully posted. Ray Preston of Portland testified he saw the suspect take mail pouches and wear a mask.

Demand for American horses by British and French governments for European battlefields has hurt the Broncho Danting industry. Denver stockyards sell hundreds of Rocky Mountain horses daily for export while many are rejected. Inspectors require riding and mounting. Western states supply riders and champions now ride up to 50 horses daily. Shipments remain heavy with weekly purchases in the thousands though some stock is rejected. Master plumbers in Salt Lake City and Colorado found guilty of Sherman Act conspiracy. sentences set for October 14.
At the University of Oregon, H. B. Miller outlines future Oregon industries including flax growing milk condensing and fertilizer manufacture. He notes fertilizer can come from air nitrogen or Oregon lake beds and cites 4 260 idle horsepower as pivotal for growth. He criticizes past reliance on apples and stresses transportation limits.
The extension service at Oregon Agricultural College will run one of six day movable schools throughout the year. Local farm organizations may promote a movable school and coordinate with county agents. Requirements include a 20 participant minimum for one day and 40 for longer sessions, an on-site room, heat, light, janitorial services, demonstration materials, and 1000 distributed programs. Subjects include horticulture, agronomy, poultry, dairy, animal husbandry, home economies, and other relevant topics. Contact the extension service at Corvallis for information.
The Ochoco irrigation initiative in Crook County advances as voters will decide on a $1,000,000 bond to fund improvements. Engineer Laws approves the project with RW Hun as project engineer and notices sent to project directors. The plan covers about 20,000 acres and contemplates a tidal valuation of 660 per acre.
