Former Athena Lawyer Dies in Portland After Illness
Robert J. Slater, a well known Oregon lawyer who once practiced in Athena, died at his Portland home Saturday after a brief illness. Born in Corvallis in 1855, he defended the Indian Columbia George at Pendleton before returning home where he grew ill. He is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters. Slater held memberships in Athena Camp and Woodmen of the World and carried life insurance of about 4000.
