In Walla Walla Thomas Bassett and Alice Bassett were tried for the alleged inhuman treatment of their 18 month old child. Neighbors had reported cruel conditions in a Poverty flat attic where the infant was kept in a dark room and fed mostly raw meat. Health Officer Alban investigated and found the baby in a ramshackle state, detailing the severe neglect as a community scandal.
James E Stevens was arrested in his shack near Obie Ennis's slaughterhouse on a charge of arson related to fires at the Abbot barn on May 26 and the Northern Pacific elevator on June 8. Police say they built a complete case and will hold a preliminary hearing in a few days.
