Two Killed In Automobile Wreck Near Weston
The wreck on Dry Creek beyond Weston claimed two lives. Thelma Durst of Pendleton and R Paul Weisel of Walla Walla died from injuries after a coupe skidded on a soft shoulder and hit a telephone pole. Everett Knight, Dr. and Mrs. McKinney aided, coroner took Durst to Pendleton, Weisel to Walla Walla General Hospital. Durst born Athena May two 1901, survived by husband Thelma, daughter Patricia Sue, parents Mr and Mrs Saling, sister Mrs Balfe Ulrich, aunt Mrs Boynton, uncle Abe Jones, grandmother Mrs Caviness.

Athena High took the second game of the season from Weston high school with a 24 to 6 victory on Weston's field Friday afternoon. Athena opened strong with Moore and Jenkins drives culminating in a touchdown by Moore. Weston answered with a single TD on a fourth down forward pass deflection. Crowley added extra points and Pickett, Crowley again, and Moore scored for Athena as Weston stalled on defense.

Tin foil drive supports Shrine hospital fundraiser

Stanton Family Delayed By Arlington Auto Accident
John Stanton and his wife Mrs. Stanton with daughter Mildred were returning from Portland when another car swerved onto the highway from John Day road and collided with the Stanton vehicle in Arlington. A Wallace family van from Stillwater Oklahoma slid 150 feet down a grade on Whitebird Hill ten miles south Grangeville Idaho. Mrs. Dennis Wallace 40 Mrs. Mary Murdock 75 Evelyn 2 were killed. Men Sentenced to Year on Federal Road Crew
Tom Gillette L L Becker and B L Banister were each sentenced by Federal Judge McNary to one year as laborers on the government road crew at Port Lewis Washington for operating a still at Kamela Oregon last August. They pleaded guilty to manufacture and possession of liquor and with conspiracy to violate the prohibition law. Franklin Truax received a year in the county jail and was paroled to attorney W M Peterson of Pendleton.

Narrow escape as child saved from Naselle river slough
In Deep River Washington on a Saturday morning the Talus children aged 3 and 5 played by the Naselle river slough. The girl fell into the water and was rescued by her mother who arrived to pull her to safety. The child escaped unharmed.

William Redford Dies at Home Near Adama and Athena
William Redford a farmer living south of Adama and well known in Athena died suddenly at his home early Sunday. His wife awoke to find him ill. Dr McKinney responded but he died of heart failure. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St Andrews Mission with interment. He is survived by his wife and one son.

Bear hunter survives after empty magazine forces melee
Ted Steel of Halfway Oregon fired two shots at a bear as it advanced. With the rifle out of ammo he shoved the rifle butt into the bear’s mouth and the animal dropped dead from wounds, ending a close life threatening encounter.
