Sheepherder John Connelly shot in Morrow County
John Connelly a sheep herder was shot Monday at Pine City in Morrow County and died in Pendleton after relatives’ instructions awaited. Otis McCarthy of Echo killed him, twice ordering halt before the shot. Connelly walked toward McCarthy with a hand on his waistband, a weapon not found on his clothing. The posse brought Connelly to Koho where he died. Before dying he said he had a brother in Salem with the National Guard, named Thomas Connelly, not yet located. The coroner’s jury exonerated McCarthy. A man burned in a box car at Foster prompted a posse search for two men. one detained as a witness, the other sought. Reports say the box car victim was a hobo, and Wilson in jail may not know of riding there. The case remains complicated.
