Colum bus residents flee Scioto high water as rainfall records from March top old marks. Reports cover European, Asian, and American fronts with military actions, political moves, and a railway accident in Michigan.
Washington report: Oregon California land grant bill advances from the House Public Lands Committee. It would allocate 30 percent of net timber and land waste receipts to counties, 20 percent to Oregon for the school fund, and 40 percent to general reclamation. The committee rejects section 7 affecting certain executory contracts and adds a relief provision for homesteaders paying $2.50 an acre.
Mrs. William Alexander notes the bill aligns with the home stead law. The sub committee completed the bill and Representative Ferris introduced it in the house. The measure will be sent to the attorney general, secretary of the interior and secretary of Agriculture for opinions and suggestions before final reporting. The discussion noted war clauses and an inventor’s plan by H W Cole to load 0 000 cotton racks bought at 11 and 12 cents. Farriers Wesley Harta Job Numm Henry Findeman are building portable elevators for the 1916 crop to move grain from field to silo for loading.
Lew A. Cates of Polit County Observer and KW Wood, formerly with Dallas team laundry, purchase the Hotel Gulf property. They take over furniture and fixtures and assume a 10 year lease term. The deal values near 800,000, marking a pivotal acquisition in the region.
The steamer Twin Cities of the Dulles-Columbia line sank near the mouth of North Portland harbor after striking an 80 foot runkan tog. Ten passengers and livestock were saved as crew and officers kept the vessel from total loss.
