Salem reports new motor vehicle rules go into effect June 6, ending the 90 day period after the legislative session. July 1 brings driver examinations and August 1 the state police formation. Changes include speed limits, arm signaling, and intersection right of way.
National Music Week sponsored by the Oregon Federation of Music Clubs runs May 3 to May 11 to focus public attention on music and expand its cultural and educational influence. Milton Milton-Freewater chair H Jurgensen leads local efforts with Athena chair Laurence Pinkerton appointing Dan Tilley, E F Bloom, Della Bryant, and community church coordinators.
The mayor issues a notice banning baseball and football on Athena streets. He cites hazard and danger from traffic and machines, and says he will stop the practice to prevent delays for motorists and protect the boys.
Plans for the Easter cantata Life Eternal move forward with the first rehearsal Tuesday at 7 30 pm at the Christian church. The cantata was performed last year by combined church choirs and community musicians and many requests for a repeat have been made.
Depositors of the Farmers Bank of Weston in liquidation received a 40 percent dividend this week totaling 29,727.27. Checks were mailed to about 500 claimants after the bank closed November 10 with deposits just over 121,000. The next dividend is scheduled for payment on or before November 1.
James Haworth from Newmarket Tennessee traveled to Oregon by motor in seven days to see his dying father James L Haworth. He may relocate to Oregon to open a barber shop in Marshfield while remaining in Athena for a time. He is joined by Ralph Haworth and Jack Eslinger seeking work as factories in the Yakima valley offer prosperity.
An old fashioned basket social hosted by the Royal Gleaners class at the Christian church Friday evening March 27 invites all, with costumes of hard times. Ladies and girls bring baskets to sell with 25¢ for children 35¢ for students and 50¢ for adults. Prizes for best basket in each division. Games and old fashioned music featured.
Ray Reynolds won the clock offered as a guessing prize by Watkins Pharmacy. The clock ran about 13 days and stopped at 10 15 a m on Sunday. Reynolds held a ticket showing 10 13 and received the timepiece.
Ten Umatilla county high schools form two districts Athena Adams Helix Weston Amapine in the east and Pilot Rock Echo Stanfield Hermiston Umatilla in the west will play within their districts with district champions meeting for the county title. Athena coach M I Miller helped organize the league and a silver cup will be awarded. Opening games are slated for Friday next week.
The 3 6 4 Club met at Mrs James Lieuallen Jr home in Adams Thursday afternoon last week. Honors went to Mrs R D Blatchford the consolation to Mrs Archie McIntyre. Mrs E C Pretbye received the guest prize. Mrs Donald Johnson to entertain the club on Thursday afternoon March 26.
Arthur Rigby of Athe na has purchased Bingham Springs from Herman Rosenberg. The Rigbys have managed the resort for two years and are popular for their courteous treatment, expected to continue in ownership and operation.
The Press notes a Salem banquet on March 27 to promote Oregon agricultural expansion. The invitation urges all interested residents to attend, citing potential gains if agriculture kept pace with population growth and referencing federal census comparisons that would boost 1929 and future incomes. Charles N. Clark of Athena died after a long illness in Pendleton. He was 78, worked as a timer in a home shop, and spent most of his life in Oregon and Washington. Survived by brothers Elmer, Ed in Dayton and Loren in Salem. funeral at Athena cemetery after services Monday. He served as a 1st lieutenant in the Nez Perce Indian War and studied at Oregon State College. His father was Benton county's first probate judge.
The city of Pilot Rock now owns the golf course. Private owners sold the tract and 82 lots were purchased. The club will continue operating the course, leasing it from the city.
United States Senator Steiner departs Washington and travels west to investigate Indian tax affairs in Oklahoma and will continue to Portland arriving March 27. The trip underscores oversight and regional engagement with tribal fiscal matters.

Funeral services for Angus M. Gillis were conducted at the Ritzville Methodist church Monday afternoon after his death Tuesday night last week at his son Lloyd Gillis in Washtuena Washington. A large crowd from Oregon and Washington attended marking his prominence in public and business affairs. Mourners traveled from Walla Walla Athena and Seattle to view the service and honor his memory.
Friends invited to celebrate Genevieve Barrett’s eighteenth birthday Friday night. Gifts were exchanged, games entertained the group, and a supper featured cake and dainties. Guests included Arleen Foster, Jewell Pinkerton, Doris Jenkins, Beverly Barrett, Aaron Douglas, Kenneth Rogers, Leo Geissel, Max Johnson and Buddy Weber.
The Baptist Missionary Society met Wednesday afternoon at Mrs. Clarence Zerba's home with eleven members and one visitor Mrs. O E Venable present. Mrs Granville Cannon led the program on the study topic West Indian Treasures followed by a social hour during which Mia Joe Anderson and Mrs Charles McFarland served refreshments.
The Athena high school's vodvil at the auditorium drew a large crowd and impressed with strong performances. Betty Eager and Roland Wilson starred in The Valiant, supported by Stafford Hansell Sol Pickett and George Pittman. The pirate act featured the Glee Club and dancers Marjorie Douglas Milred Hansell Howard Reeder, with highlights from Emery Rogers and the Rhythm Boys Garth Pinkerton Ralph Moore. The Hawaii garden finale showcased Helen Barrett and Fred Singer as the lovers. The show repeats tonight at 8 o'clock with the same cast.
A Saturday night party at the Hansell residence hosted by Staf ford and Mildred Hansell featured an Irish shanty theme. Burlap decorations coal oil lanterns wash tub seating shamrocks and crepe paper costumes created a festive scene. Guests included Helen Barrett Mary Jane Miller Betty Jane Eager Marjorie Douglas Bernice Wilson Goldie Miller Esther Berlin Dorothy Burke and others.
Mrs F B Radtke hosted the Athena Study club Friday at Third Street home. Mrs E C Rogers described the Great Wall of China while Mrs W O Read spoke on Peking. Next meeting Friday March 27 at Mrs Read's home with Korea as the topic.
Lee Chrisman, who cleans cars for $90 a month in Bend, proves loyalty by reporting to work on schedule after receiving a $10,000 windfall from his Dennison, Texas based C. A. Chrisman family. The funds come from three oil wells near Texarkana producing about 100000 barrels daily. The check was sent by Chrisman's mother.
A Washington dispatch to the Oregon Journal says Roseburg is likely to host the Pacific Northwest Soldiers Home if it donates 160 acres beyond the 240 already offered. Hoover approved the plan with a $1 million project cap, engineers to make final site selection amid competing Vancouver and Roseburg interests.
The Athena boys basketball team attended a dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. M. I. Miller. Guests included sixteen players such as Bi Bloom and Stafford Hansell, with many others named. The girls’ team joined later for games and refreshments.
The Pinochle Club met Wednesday night at the L. A. Cornell residence on College Street. Dinner for twenty four preceded six tables of play with high score by Mrs. Will Campbell and Charley Potter. Consolation prizes went to Mrs. Arthur Jenkins and Jesse Smith while guest prizes were awarded to Mrs. Dick Swift and Ernest Ross. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Swift, Miss Margaret Lee, Miss Blanche Thorson, Miss Della Bryant, Mrs. Ernest Ross and Mrs. Fred Remillard.
Dr. Clark, eyesight specialist from Portland, visited Pendleton on Wednesday. He once belonged to the Heppner baseball team in 1904 which faced the Yellow Kids in the Pendleton tournament, losing 8 to 2. He studied a group photo of the Yellow Kid team at the Press Office.
A business visitor from HH Eickhoff, now headquartered in Walla Walla, arrived Wednesday to dispose of machinery formerly used by his company which has ceased operations nearby. He reported selling five Caterpillar machines to a single buyer who plans to rent them out.
