In Athena on March 11, 1898 the supreme court affirmed Judge Bellinger of the U S circuit court in Oregon, upholding the 1892 mortgage tax act. The Savings and Loan Society argued the law violated the equal protection clause, but the decision held mortgages fixed for assessment within Oregon.
