U P Is Testing Largest Engine for Mountain Hauls
The Union Pacific built the largest locomotive of its type for heavy passenger trains over mountain lines and tested it by pulling passenger train No. 17 into Portland from Pocatello without uncoupling. Constructed after study by Omaha railroad experts and American Locomotive Co. officials, the 90 foot engine with eight driving wheels may perform work of two engines. If successful, UP plans to order more for service between Cheyenne Wyoming and Pendleton.

Rancher Electrocuted While Moving Derrick in Yard
Tom Christensen of Haines was killed by electricity when a derrick moved by his team contacted a transmission wire. The current killed him instantly, and the derrick dragged across his body. Christensen was a prominent local rancher with a wife and two children.
