Good crops lure labor as harvests draw in Pendleton

Scully of Central Door Lumber Co. arrives in Pendleton after visiting Heppner Tone Condon and Lexington to report many farmers will seek seasonal work in Umatilla county and the Walla Walla valley. He notes widespread crop losses, many grain warehouses not opening, and calls for civic groups to assure steady employment to attract threshers and equipment owners.

Chief Campbell Dies In Portland Oil Plant Fire

Chief David Campbell, veteran head of the Portland fire department, was killed early Monday while directing efforts to control a fierce blaze at the Union Oil Company plant in Portland. The building exploded as he entered to assess the danger, destroying the plant and injuring or killing others nearby.

Wood's Team Defeated in Odd Game After Discovery

Colonel Wood led his squad from West on Saturday as Ish Watts' Hasbeins dominated early. Jim Prica and Bert Cartano starred for Weston and Athene, while Fay LeGrow added key baserunning. Local Anglers Arrested On Umatilla River

H A Bundy and Charles May of Athena were arrested by Deputy Fish Warden Thompson while fishing on the Umatilla river last Saturday. They were fined 25 dollars each in Pendleton Justice Court for possessing trout under legal size. A claim is made that Thompson provided the evidence by weighing and not notifying them of illegality and by noting that small fish were kept in one basket.

Pendleton Roundup Park hosts the final Blue Mountain league game of the season as Billy Littlejohn’s pennant winners face the Buckaroos. Boys Grow Gardens in Portland as Extension Work Ends

The Oregon Agricultural College led a citywide garden project for 125 boy gardeners in Portland with support from the Young Men's Christian Association and the college's agriculture department. Demonstrations by Arthur G. B. Bonquet covered hot bed and cold frame structures, seedling production, soil prep, transplanting, irrigation, tomato cultivation, and vegetable marketing for exhibit and prize purposes.

Pavilion changes planned for Pendleton fair week crowd surge

The Third Eastern Oregon District Agricultural Society outlines extensive pavilion renovations for Pendleton during fair week. Plans include a single royal arch entrance with ticket windows, relocated Umatilla county booth, expanded seating, expanded music shell, and an extended platform for speakers and vaudeville.

Church Sends Delegates to State and National Conventions

The State and National Conventions of the Churches of Christ will meet in Portland through July 11 with Athena hosting delegates. Pastors Meldrum and Taylor left today with others to follow. Meldrum will deliver the annual address next Sunday. Delegates to the Christian Woman's Board of Missions include Mrs. Meldrum and Mrs. Taylor. The Turner state convention meets with Portland’s national meeting, recalling past national gatherings at Topeka in 1909 and Pittsburgh in 1908 with large attendance. 40,000 joined in a Lord's Supper service. A Christian Church service will be led by Robert Lea Hurenbarger of New Albany, Indiana, while in Athena.
