Preparations for a July Fourth event in Athena include Knights of Pythias County Lodges coordinating committees, band music by Milton-Freewater’s 25-piece group, and an all-day program at City Park from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. A Baptist Sunday school picnic will join the day’s events, with Walter M. Piercy as principal speaker and a Dokle patrol street procession planned by Walla Walla.

Wheat Growers to Meet Next Monday at Athena

Oregon Wheat Growers will convene at Athena on June 12 at 1 p m. to discuss 1921 pool results. George Jewett, NW Wheat Growers Associa tion manager, will present member figures and a detailed year in review including farmer organization expenses. He recently toured northern states where similar groups form. The Northwest Associated plans to handle about 10 000 000 bushels for North Dakota producers. The Athena meeting is open to all wheat producers, not only Oregon members, plus local business and professional men.

Civic Club Meeting Meld Tuesday Afternoon

An interesting Civic club meeting Tuesday afternoon featured the report of Mrs C M Enger delegate to the State Convention of Federated clubs at Tillamook next week. Mrs Eagye spoke on magazines and writers, with refreshments served by Mrs R A Thompson and Mrs Samuel Haworth. A decision on refreshments for the upcoming K P event on July 4 was postponed to June 20 for broader attendance. Miltons Strawberry Day is set for next Tuesday June 13 with Milton inviting all Amatille and part of Walla Walla counties to attend and help celebrate the queen of fruits.

Time extended for Camp Lewis citizen soldiers applications

The period for applications to attend the citizen's Military Camp at Camp Lewis from July 27 to August 25 has been extended from May into early June due to Oregon and Washington quotas not yet being reached.

Hunters Pursue Bear Cubs and Cougar near Hageron

In Hageron yon on the Umutilig J E Jones and The Davidson Ath¬ana hunters chased an old bear and two cubs after locating them. Seth Hyatt reportedly aided by firing evening shots. A startled cougar burst from the brush 500 yards away and charged downslope before escaping into cover, leaving the hunters with an eventful but unsuccessful chase. Dr J Smith urges six per cent loans from Oregon Washington joint stock bank to aid Umatilla and Walla Walla farmers. The bank will dispatch federal appraisers and issue loans up to four million dollars with a four and a half year term.
