Brother shoots brother and flees on reservation

The grand encampment of Odd Fellows of Oregon elected Claude Gateh as grand chief patriarch and W J Vawter as grand high priest. First Official Whipping Under New Law in Portland

Charlex McGinty of Portland was convicted for beating his wife to extract money and earnings. He received 20 lashes, the first punishment under the whipping-post act, administered by a deputy sheriff with a cat-o-nine tails on the bare back, each stroke drawing blood. Good Roads Meeting in Pendleton on June 12

A national good roads convention will be held in Pendleton next Monday June 12 with the Pendleton commercial association raising 200 dollars to cover incidental expenses. Three sessions are planned at 10 am 3 pm and 8 pm with addresses and musical numbers. A Woodmen ceremony at Walla Walla and an O R N excursion rate are mentioned along with a Pendleton versus Walla Walla baseball game.

Convicts Escape From State Penitentiary Road Crew

Edmund Lomagnot and Fred Collins, trustees at the state penitentiary, escaped from guards on a Slough road work crew about a mile and a half south of Salem on a Wednesday afternoon. They leapt into heavy brush to flee.

Reports of a man dubbed Jack the Window Cutter in Pendleton worrying merchants as plate glass windows of several dry goods stores were scratched. Grand jury seated in Penleton with Judge Bilis returns five true bills and three not true. Indictments include Moses Taylor for attempted arson in Baker County with two accomplices, and H B Kershaw for grain shipment without authority. Ex sheriff Huntington faces defalcation trial next Tuesday with Baker County witnesses and attorneys present. Work Advances on Athena Gravity Water System

Work at the head of Athena s new gravity water system nears completion with main intake pipes and laterals laid. The high crew will dig the reservoir and ditch to town while rock is crushed for lining. Pipe shipments expected by June 15 and near completion by July 1. a freight car fire near the depot caused no damage to potatoes.
