The Seals of the Pribyloff Islands and Their Separate Herds
The Pribyloff Islands host two distinct fur seal herds with separate skins and breeding patterns. American seals here are land-dwellers, breed on the islands for most of the year, and disperse only briefly to feed, while the other herd remains tied to its distant, fogbound home. The rookeries are the world’s largest, with government control restricting slaughter to young males. females and older bulls are protected to sustain the herd, and the industry could value the islands at about thirty million dollars if preserved.
