Umatilla County purchases three spray machines to apply calcium chlorate for weed control. A 40 000 lb car of calcium chlorate is being contracted, price up to 11 cents per pound with possible rebates. Farmers urged to order promptly as the chemical arrives soon and effective dosing is one and a half pounds per square rod.
County Agent Holt reports April dairy results from Umatilla Herd Improvement Association. 740 cows tested. average yield 67 pounds milk with 25.3 pounds fat. 98 cows produced over 40 pounds of fat. 52 herds on rest. Haddox herd leads with 15 grade Holsteins at 1213 pounds milk and 43.7 pounds fat. High producing cow is A. Carter’s grade Jersey at 1296 pounds milk and 72.6 pounds fat. Cooper's Stanfield cows, 8. R. Cooper, second high cow. 1075 pounds milk and 68.8 fat in a grade Jersey. Twelve boarders sold. not paying their way. Over 20 cow Jersey herd under Cooper yields 753 pounds milk and 38.0 fat. Haddox’s 15 Holsteins top herds between 12 and 20 cows. Roy Barker’s seven cows Jersey herd at Irrigon yields 649 pounds milk per cow and 39.3 fat.

Frank McMinn and Dick Hearnden will be charged with driving while intoxicated after a fatal hit and run that killed Leland Nixon near College Place. Prosecutor W. G. Coleman said both admitted intoxication but denied being in the car at the moment of impact. they described drinking trips that night and could not recall the return time.
Little Jimmie McIntyre suffered a badly lacerated and bruised left hand Monday after it became caught between the wringer rollers of his family washing machine. His mother had left the machine running while hanging clothes on the line and he moved the wringer, attempting to stop it, before the device was released.

Frank Beale, longtime stockman of Athena, travels with his son Claud and grandson to transport two truckloads of hogs from Athena to Portland Market. The Beales, farming in the Grande Ronde valley, say trucks now haul more stock from up to 350 miles away, and stock arrives in better condition than by rail. Cloud Beale reports 500 acres of fall sown grain in harvest, about a month later than early Umatilla county operations.
Roland Richards adds a new pony named Topsy to his four head herd joining Tommy Dutch and another. Bill and Kenny Rogers drove Topsy to the Press office for the editor's inspection on Wednesday. The pony, barely hitched to a vehicle, behaved well and walked away with Bill guiding.
Campers using Umatilla National Forest from June 15 to September 30 must obtain a camp fire permit before entering the timber. Exclusions include oil or gas stoves and campers in two designated areas. Permits available from forest offices, ranger stations, lookouts, sporting goods stores in Milton and Walla Walla, La Grande, Heppner county agent, Dayton auditor, and sheriff offices in Washington counties.
A new normal school building in La Grande was dedicated Wednesday afternoon with Governor Patterson and Mrs. Patterson in attendance along with regents, visiting officials, and educators. Governor Patterson and Stephen B. L. Penrose president of Whitman College delivered addresses after the cornerstone ceremony.
