Accident claims life of nine year old in gunshot incident
Harley Newport 9 year old Heppner boy died Tuesday from an accidental gunshot wound. The child was fatally wounded when his uncle was removing bedding in which a shotgun was wrapped and the gun discharged, the load entering the boy's groin. An emergency operation failed to save his life.

Mosier Artisan Well Opens in Wasco County District
The Mosier fruit district in Wasco county celebrates a new artesian well that flow tested as the largest in the mid-Columbia district. Water spouted four feet above a four-inch casing after pumping began at eighty feet, last twenty feet through basalt. Located on the N R Brooks ranch, the well was built for orchard irrigation but may be bought by Mosier for domestic use and fire protection.

Blaze Causes Minor Damage at State Penitentiary Yard
Fire started at 2:00 p m Tuesday in a small shed on the island inside the penitentiary walls where convicts work with the flax plant. Sparks from the incinerator sparked the blaze and damage was under $50. The state insane hospital also burned Monday around the same time. Over 900 prisoners are housed at the penitentiary. James Lewis, the superintendent, said Salem fire crews arrived too late to stop the flames.
