Chicago division over free silver and money reform as Democratic leaders push for a Bryan nomination. Platform fights, committee votes, and rousing speeches from Hill and Bryan supporters frame the tumultuous convention amid calls for unity and stronger silver coinage.
The Salem revoltclub passes a nonvoting call to remove Jonathan Boorse as secretary of the state central committee. It notes Br. Hoerna has joined the populists amid clashes with the republican platform while President Bloss resigns from the state college leadership and new regents discuss succession.
The Travelers' Protective Association of America held its annual convention in Terre Haute Indiana with representatives from every state. The report to Oregon and Washington division details a push for state level legislation requiring a two cent rate on all railroads for all travelers merchants farmers and citizens, aiming to wake railroads and gain broader support, including women and children, in a nationwide campaign. A secondary note reports a fatal accident at Virtue mine and a Baker City court case involving a swindler using the sewing machine game targeting private homes.
The Hon Martin Quinn travels to Chicago for convention proceedings and shares views on populist and silver democrat alignment. He favors Teller or Sibley as strong champions but doubts Democratic backing for either. He cites unity clues from recent events and wryly notes the laundry wagon would resume its rounds after the vote.
Ram Grant, a noted freighter from Foseil, carried 8600 pounds of freight when a bridge owned by M A Moody near The Dalles collapsed. His six horse team and two wagons plunged 40 feet into the John Day River. Nearby men pulled Grant from the wreck though he was battered and injured. Three horses were killed, two so mangled they were shot, the sixth saved. The bridge had been condemned for years. Lair Hill once owned it and sold to mortgaged creditors. The Supreme Court will sit in Pendleton mid July to hand down decisions on cases heard in May.
The Seattle man Lew is described as willing to run for governor if his views are endorsed by the Democratic party. He favors free coinage at 16 to 1, lower tariff rates, abolition of unnecessary offices, and fusion with any party backing reform. He would accept the nomination if offered.
