Pioneer Dickenson Dies After Smallpox Illness
John Benjamin Dickenson a longtime Athena pioneer died at 77 years old from smallpox complications. A wagon maker since 1875, he traveled western camps, mining and freighting, and helped in campaigns against native peoples. He was married to Naomi Banks in 1871 and left three sons Oliver Sime Roache and two daughters Ruth and Linzi. Funeral services were held at the grave after a church service could not be held due to contagion.
