The 85th Oregon Legislature began in Salem with rapid organization and the lawmakers hearing the governor's message. More than 140 House bills were introduced on day one as the Senate received two bills. Senator Northland led as president pro tempore with 27 votes, and John P. Hunt won as chief clerk. The House named Elbert Bede temporary clerk and Paul Burris as temporary speaker. Ralph S. Hamilton won the speakership with 67 votes and the oath of office was administered to all members. Speaker Hamilton deferred his formal message.

Accident on Mountain Road Destroys Oldsmobile Wreck
Ray Gordon of Weston drove an Oldsmobile sedan on Pine Creek road to Reed and Hawley mountain when it left the road Sunday. The car turned over several times and stopped against a tree. The steel top frame likely saved the occupants who were only slightly cut and bruised. Window broken, car badly sprung and twisted.

Cecil Schrimpsher Arrested for Theft in Pendleton
Cecil Schrimpsher of the east end county is jailed in Pendleton on a theft charge after confessing to stealing wheat from the Robert Still warehouse at Bade station. He allegedly moved 22 sacks to Walla Walla in three trips, was captured by Sheriff Mc Inroe, and may plead guilty without a preliminary hearing. The wheat belonged to the J. A. Lumsden estate.

The trial of Ralph Shall of Pendleton for murder in the second degree has been continued to February 4. Judge Parker granted the postponement after the defense affidavits stated that witness James J. Malloy is needed. Malloy is not in Pendleton at this time.
Aunt Polly Spencer Dies After Illness at 96
Aunt Polly Spencer died Wednesday afternoon after a period of declining health and intestinal influenza. Born Mary Linyard Spencer in Tennessee in 1848, she married Sam L. Spencer during the Civil War era and moved to Texas before settling in Athena in 1892. She joined the Methodist church at twenty and was a devoted member. She is survived by brother L. H. Linyard of Greenbrier Arkansas and niece Mrs V A Gholson who has lived in Athena seven years. funeral at the Methodist Episcopal church today at one.
