Quarantine Lifted As Athena Public School Reopens

Athena’s public school reopened after a three week closure caused by mild scarlet fever in town and surrounding areas. Health officials imposed a strict quarantine during the holiday period, delaying commerce but preventing further sickness. One or two homes remain under quarantine as cases decline.

J D Kirk of Ukiah, who ran Hidaway Springs last season, was rescued after survival ordeals in the Birch creek mount ains. He left Pilot Rock for east Birch creek and strayed into high terrain, facing starvation and freezing as he traversed the mountains.

Open River Convention Aims to Open Columbia and Snake Navigation

The Walla Walla Commercial Association convenes January 22 to discuss opening the Columbia and Snake rivers to navigation. Jerry Stone leads efforts to repeal the $1.65 per thousand tariff on grain sacks, seeking relief for farmers during harvest. Delegations from Pendieten and other commercial bodies will attend to support the cause.

An advertisement touts a liver invigorator and stomach tonic called Golden Medical Discovery a patent medicine claimed to strengthen nerves and relieve digestive ills. It lists ingredients as fluid extract from Golden Seal Stone root Black Cherry bark Queen's root Bloodroot and other native plants with a free booklet offer and oath attestation.

The O A N Railroad filed in federal court to stop Walla Walla County from collecting delinquent taxes for 1904 amounting to 10551.80. The suit alleges the 1904 valuation rose from 7600 to 10900 per mile, with total 85646.39 taxes, and the railroad plans a vigorous fight to avoid a 10 000 per mile valuation. Oregon League for Public Ownership of Railroads started in Portland led by Hiram Vrooman and others. Athena Coal Car Loot and Shortage Report

The second Portland bound coal car to arrive in Athena was opened en route and many tons were missing or sifted away. Weight fell about three tons, forcing a seven dollar per ton adjustment to break even. Car came via Hon A Barrett who pressed officials for fuel, amid railroad strain.
