Manasse Dead After Operation at Walla Walla

Edward Manasse Athena merchant died at St Marys hospital Walla Walla after a third operation within a year. His wife and daughter were with him. The Odd Fellow was a longtime trader, former Athena city council member and known for charity. Funeral in Walla Walla this afternoon.

Death of Fred Williams near Albina and local notes

Fred Williams died at his home near Albina Washington on Sunday afternoon from pneumonia after a period of poor health. He had worked land and operated a steam threshing outfit before settling east of Athena, later moving to Washington to raise wheat. He leaves a wife and several children. Governor Chamberlain vetoed the Smith normal school bill, arguing the legislature must decide and cannot delegate. Night ride over chasms on railroad bicycle thrill

A Seattle man J. W. Leslie and Dr. O. W. Croup from Walla Walla rode a railroad bicycle across treacherous tracks with 60 foot chasms and washed out sections from Eureka Junction toward Walla Walla. They warned by officials but endured seven washouts and a raging torrent beneath the suspended rails before safely completing the crossing and signaling their OK. Oregon teachers’ salaries rise under house bill 165, increasing state per capita school tax from 6 to 7 dollars and adding one dollar per child to district funding, passed Senate and awaiting governor’s signature.

Cattle shipments rise as Echo country sends stock south
