After six years of effort by Congressman Lafferty and his predecessor, Oregon gains a patent from the United States confirming title to 7000 acres in the school lands program. The development casts doubt on the congressman's stance before the public while advancing state education land goals.
Patent receipt for about 7000 acres of school lands in the Lake View district matters more for the school fund than the land. It exposes falsehoods in Portland Telegram attacks on Senator George B. Joaquin Miller, the poet of the Sierras, died Monday afternoon in a self built Piedmont cabin. His daughter Ninita and his wife were with him as death came after a long illness began with paralysis two years earlier. An Oregon figure, Miller lived in Kagone and Canyon City during mining days and later taught school at Weston.

He is charged with false registration in Seattle on January 7. Single taxers, prompted by Dr. Eggleston of Portland, found Shields registered in Portland last November and thus unable to vote in Washington. Shields admits voting in Portland but says he did not know he forfeited his Washington voting rights after 16 years residence.
