A Salem to Portland canoe trip on the Willamette River after 2:30 PM Saturday ended in tragedy when a Portland Rowing Club canoe capsized near Rock Island five miles south of Oregon City. Charles Kirkpatrick and Harry Gammie, both Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club members, drowned, while six others escaped. Gammie was a pay ing teller at Ladd & Tilton Bank and Kirkpatrick worked at First National Bank. The accident occurred as the crew battled eddies and swift current descending from Salem toward Portland.

In Douglas county Circuit Court Judge Hamilton ruled that the Southern Oregon company’s land taxes for 1909 are collectible and that delinquent certificates may be used to satisfy tax liens. Unpaid taxes total about 80,000 dollars. The company plans an appeal to the state Supreme Court.
