Light for Fire Department Goes All Night at Three Stations

Arne Athena fire department now has an all night electric light service at Hose company No 1, Hose company No 2, and the Hook and Ladder company. The Preston Parton Milling Company supplies power while the city covers wiring and installation. Each station operates a 32 candle power incandescent lamp, reducing run delays and easing access to equipment.

Pendleton trip by Athena drummers draws crowd in snow

A crowd of traveling salesmen rode a lumber wagon from Athena to Pendleton this morning, the outing engineered by J B Bell and C H Barton. The party included drummers, farmers, and Umatilla Indians, attracting cheers and a runaway butcher shop horse along Main Street. They aimed to cover about fifty miles before dark despite washouts on the rails.

Tax payment rules begin Monday in county

The county prepares to collect taxes at the sheriff’s office starting Monday with rebates for early payment. A 3 percent rebate applies if paid by March 15. no rebate or penalties from March 15 to the first Monday in April. delinquency and 10 percent penalty plus 12 percent interest after the first Monday in April. Half payments allowed by April and due by October. failure triggers penalties and interest. Personal property taxes require half payment by April and lands are to be seized if unpaid by March 1 of the following year. Deeds and certificates issued to lowest interest bidder if not redeemed within three years.

Smith Normal bill creates two state normal schools

The bill passed the house authorizing two state normal schools with about $75 000 to $76 000 for maintenance. The state board of education and two legislators will select from four existing schools. Reports from Salem say Eastern Oregon should get one school, Weston relocation not planned, and choice centers on Western Oregon with Oakland and Monmouth options narrowed to merit.

One House Built Opera House By Hand In Early Walla Walla

John Tem pany veteran veterinary surgeon of the 9th cavalry now at Fort Riley Kansas, recalls arriving in Walla Walla in 1858. He helped build the old fort and the first opera house using slabs and hand tools. Temany also built Vancouver Waab’s first opera house and once rode across to the mines. He notes Sen at or Ankeny among early locals. The 6th cavalry heads to the Philippines. Tempany awaits Seattle duty buying horses for the government. his son Henry led the Walla Walla Booster team last season.

Mrs Pearson wife of William Pearson carried out a liquor protest at a saloon in North Powder Monday evening. Furniture smashed lights broken and other damage occurred.
