Man confesses to double murder at mountain ranch west of Meacham
Joe Perry a 27 year old farm laborer confessed to officers that he shot and killed Orville Townsend known as Shorty Saunders and Fred Knowlton at Knowlton's mountain ranch. Perry said Townsend attacked him in a drunken fight and he killed both after fleeing to a barn and lighting the structure on fire. Townsend's wife found the charred remains and reported them at Meacham. Perry later returned home and was taken into custody in Pendleton.
