The Three-Cent Silver Coin Versus The Gold Dollar
A historical note compares the three-cent silver piece and the gold dollar. It explains the three-cent coin’s early utility for postal rates and general circulation, while the gold dollar is criticized as largely useless beyond decorative uses. It cites Maurice Muhleman of the sub treasury on the gold dollar’s discardable status. The piece links the three-cent coin’s popularity to its practical purpose and contrasts it with later nickel coins.
