Chamber Fights Farm Board Plan
Washington reports a clash between the United States Chamber of Commerce and the federal farm board as the drive toward farmer marketing through cooperatives gains traction. The chamber argues private enterprise should not face discriminatory treatment that favors cooperatives and warns the farm board must consider costs and private services already offered to farmers. Representatives of middlemen warn that cooperative expansion could threaten existing grain elevators storage firms and dairy dealers. The chamber asserts cooperative marketing must operate with minimum costs and that loan security relies on evaluating economies of cooperative versus private marketing.
