Oregonian splits from party ties and pledges independence

An editorial from the Portland Oregonian declares independence from any party, stating support for Roosevelt if nominated but remaining silent on other prospects. It criticizes party appeals and notes the paper can be as independent as opponents to the Democratic party in Oregon while signaling potential support for Roosevelt if pressured. The piece contrasts past Republican alignment with a future unaffiliated stance. It also covers commemorations near Walla Walla for the Whitman massacre with speakers and fundraising efforts for the monument, highlighting personal reminiscences from Nancy Jacobs of Portland. Cleve Myers is promoted at the central telephone office, taking on night and afternoon shifts.
