The O. R. and Northern Pacific balance sheets indicate a solid rise in passenger and car business this year vs 1907. Freight traffic climbs notably, aided by Athena flour milling and Pendleton to Walla Walla service, while the Northern Pacific focuses on freight and Sound market shipments.

The land, west of the limits near Main Street and part of the Richard’s estate, yielded a good wheat crop this year. Buyers Jobus and Johns contemplate future residence and northern relocation for family and wheat holdings.
The Fane Athena Harmony club plans a farewell party the day after noon at the home of Mixa Reta Roth sock. Members soon to leave Athena will be honored as Weston club members are expected to attend if weather permits on the lawn.
Governor Chamberlain names CG Barrett as delegate to the National Irrigation Congress to be held from September 29 to October 3 in Albuquerque New Mexico. Since transportation was not provided with the commission, a proxy may be named. Local moves report Miss Jeasie Smith entering the Normal school at Woaton.
Weston Brickyard company prepares to restart for a brief season and intends to begin active work next Monday. A local note mentions a bad check incident involving James Lethbridge, a farm band worker, who allegedly forged three checks totaling $100 on Pendleton merchants Bood Brothers, Mex Baer, and Liv Ringood.
W. E. Rathorn, a Helix wheat farmer, forged checks including one for Ruthors’ name and was arrested by Sheriff Saylor while in soft drink resorts after lingering in intoxication. A mass meeting in La Grande pledged funds to an irrigation plan claiming Meadowbrook water would irrigate 20,000 acres with a cement dam 10 feet wide and 105 feet high to supply 35,000 acres, though the project outlines 20,000.
The American National Bank of Pendleton is authorized to begin business as a national bank. The old Pendleton Savings Bank becomes a national bank under federal supervision, retaining officers including cashier Jim Maloney. The move enhances the bank's popularity in Umatilla county and preserves its liberal policy. Also notes soldiers' pay increases, harvest progress in Umatilla county, a girl diver at Lehman springs, and local appearances of lawyer Pruitt in Sheridan Wyoming.
