The schooner Blossom spent 31 months and 20 000 miles collecting pelagic and island life for the Cleveland museum. Of 12 000 specimens, 5 000 were birds and many fish including sharks barracuda and dolphins. The voyage yielded a siphonophore Portuguese man o war and a sea devil harpooned after encounters with a wing span up to twelve feet.
The report notes Midocean fishing produced limited results with most specimens captured around islands in the South Atlantic, extending its torpedo-shaped body over 160 feet or more.
A Los Gatos frog business failed after a shipment from New Orleans contained toads not bullfrogs. Prof. Silas Wentworth reports the firm borrowed heavily to build netted runs and grow millions of frogs, but the misidentified stock led to collapse and bankruptcy.
