McFadyen plans to restart a chicken ranch with 800 hens to supply the egg market for a year. The operation features up-to-date facilities, houses, incubator and brooding rooms, feed gear, and a gas engine. Athena Club Plans August 19 Food Sale for Orphans

The Athena Club will hold a food sale on August 19 offering various edibles to raise funds for four jeep orphans. Members have supported the cause with letters of thanks from France, translated by Miss Maude Sherman, noting continuing local activities through summer with the next meeting September 5 at Mrs. Lloyd Michener’s home. three visitors attended the last meeting.

Farming woes hit Claresholm in dry year 1918

Nick Tullinger of near Claresholm Alberta reports his crops are a total failure and livestock suffer as forage cannot be grown locally. He notes no rain since May 1918 and that forage is only shipped in by railway, highlighting extreme conditions in the North country.

Houser Enters Athena Field for Grain Purchase

M. H. Houser, a Portland grain dealer, has entered the Athena field to buy grain. B. B. Richards, experienced in grain buying, acts as Houser’s local agent. Cliff Banister reports a 21 day harvest in Cold Springs district using a 16 foot combine, field pace about 700 acres, with 33 head of cattle and other notes. Grain moves toward the warehouse along the Northern Pacific line from Van Ssycle Canyon.

Small Margin Seen in Textbook Prices This Fall

A circular from the county school superintendent notes only slight differences between exchange and retail prices for new textbooks this fall. The largest gap is in the government text where exchange is 1.00 and retail 1.82, a 32 cent spread, with arithmetic 60 or 62 cents and geography 56 versus 72 cents. Higher grades show bigger gaps like stenography at 15 cents exchange versus 1.50 retail, and other titles such as book keeping, French, and algebra showing 40 to 70 cent exchange against 80 to 1.20 retail.

Big Rock Crusher Plant Moves to Athena for Road Surfacing

The Warren Construction Company shifts the rock crushing plant from Adams to Athena to supply macadam surfacing from Pendleton to the state line north of Freewater. The facility, near the O W depot, will employ about twenty workers including four truck drivers. Planners anticipate completing the Adams plant relocation by month’s end, with works pushed from both ends to close the section quickly.
