The Henry Gales case and several defendants in Oregon land fraud are set for trial or dismissal at the November term. Hermann to be tried alone in Portland. others mostly paused or slated for dismissal as judge Becker and Worthington seek steadier proceedings. Notices to patent Indian lands require 30 days posting before final action.
Major A E McFatridge has seized the reservation affairs and secured over 100 patents for Indian allottees. Most are mixed bloods with allotments from 40 to 160 acres. Patents were delayed by law for 25 years from 1892, though a later act allows patenting if Indians can manage their own affairs.
Wheat in Athena hits 80 cents for the first time in years as harvest proceeds. Few sales yet as owners watch the market with an upward tilt. A massive blaze in Fernie British Columbia destroys West Fernie and annex areas, consuming cedar valley yards and bridges. The Elk Lumber yards and Great Northern line burn, with Fort Steele Brewery and old town structures wiped out. Eighteen bodies recovered, many missing, as crews battle embers and wind. A miner and his wife and two children perished in a well while seeking refuge.
A threshing machine engine fire swept a wheat field three miles southwest of Milton sending 1200 sacks of wheat alight in two settings. Strong south wind fanned the blaze, endangering land owned by W H Fagor and Claude W Steen while J H Goffman’s crop burned. Insurance coverage was noted at 50 cents per bushel. The blaze raged from 6 to 7 and took over an hour to control.
