Portage Road Right of Way Clash With Oregon Rail Line

The Portage Road Commission met with O R N President Mohler to discuss land rights along the line. Mohler rejected selling state right of way, citing impracticalities and saying the state would face at least a million dollars if forced off the O R N lands. The commission warned eminent domain could be used, risking delays beyond the current appropriation unless the railroad sells a one mile strip.

Italian Gardener Dies After Runaway in Walla Walla

Sara Talarico, about 40, an Italian gardener set to marry in Italy, died in Walla Walla after a wagon runaway. Dragged by angry horses, he was thrown, entangled in lines, and crushed by hoofs. He was a sober, industrious man preparing for marriage.

The Golden Rule hotel in Pendleton has new owner T K Beard of Modesto California who buys from Conrad Kehler for 26000. Kehler receives 40 acres in Despain Gulch valued at 14000 and the balance in cash. The new owner plans improvements including adding at least one story to the building.
